We share a common name, Nelson, but have no known kinship. I started reading her books on a whim, at the time I was fascinated with cats and also colors, so when I saw Cat in an Indigo Mood I bought it. I was so impressed with her writing that I started emailing her. Later I met her at a book signing in Lansing, and in March 2004, visited her in Fort Worth.
I do feel a kindred spirit in her writing. I'm encouraged in that she does things in her writing that I want to do but no one else is doing, so now I'm not afraid to bread the mold. What does she do? Mixes view points in the story. When Louie is speaking it's in first person. The rest of the story is in third person, and yet at times feels like first person. She skips around between characters, and her chapters are short. The genre is mixed, there's a little bit of fantasy and romance along with mystery and adventure. Her use of colors is outstanding as is the use of metaphors, similes, alliteration, puns and humor. At times I feel like I'm reading poetry, not prose - I'll coin a name for it, proesetry. OK, her books are not an easy read. I have to slow down to read them lest I miss something, and also look up things as I go along. I'm amazed at the knowledge and insight she has, so it's worth the extra effort.
